30 Below: Why
the change?
Truth: A
new executive producer. I wanted to add more
music. I wrote 75% of the songs on the album.
It’s based on what I wanted to do. One
of the songs Raphael Saadiq produced, and
I told him that I wanted to do a woman-to-woman
thing. It felt great. I wasn’t ready
for the responsibility before when I was with
Dr. Dre. But now I know.
30B: Dre worked on this project?
T: No, because
I had a ridiculous deadline. I spoke to him
and he said ‘yeah,’ but I only
had four months to do the record. Didn’t
have two years to record the album like last
time. I think a lot of time you can do a lot
of overstepping your creativity. Over thinking.
We just let it flow. It didn’t take
long to do that. There were a couple of things
that I wanted to add but it didn’t take
away from the album.
30B: How do you think the public will respond
to your new sound?
T: It depends.
They can be affected by Dre not being there
or be open to a new thing…me being with
Raphael. I would lean toward the new of course.
It’s the future. That doesn’t
mean I wouldn’t want to go back and
work with Dr. Dre.
